SLOW
by Elsie Gagliardi
Exhibition – September 1 – October 2, 2025
Slow is an exhibition where artist Elise Gagliardi uses photography to reflect on time, ritual, and family life. Her sharply detailed large-scale images invite the viewer to slow down. Inviting her audience to connect the narratives of life’s fragility between images of a bouquet with a blurred gesture, to a cup of tea, sitting by the fire, or smelling the roses. She employs traditional candid black and white photos to further quiet each image giving a mystery of time, and space with an emphasis on figure and form. Each of these images was taken with a medium format digital camera printed on archival pigment based photo paper.

My artistic interests center on the embodied memory of presence and how philosophical experiences are expressed within my body of work. The representation and experience of my artwork can be profoundly intimate and emotional, reflecting an acceptance and respect for the essence of being human. The self-reflective moments I cultivate through my work aim to foster empathy and a spirit of connection with others. Ultimately, my artwork embraces and celebrates humanity. The three images I chose are among the most appreciated projects I have had the opportunity to exhibit in prestigious venues, including the National Museum of Women’s Art, Washington DC (2020), the Nelson-Atkins Museum (2023), and the UB’s Anderson Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2010).
