The Special Education major at Avila
The School of Education has a reputation for graduating excellent teachers who are well prepared to teach today’s children and youth. Our comprehensive programs focus on content knowledge, research-based pedagogy, and practical application through field-based and clinical experiences.
Teacher candidates in the program will learn the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional attitudes and dispositions to be outstanding Special Education Teachers. This major will lead to Missouri teaching certification in K-12 Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical Disabilities and 1–6 Elementary.

Career preparation
Avila’s Education programs include extensive field-based experiences and clinical components. In one of the first education courses, students are placed with a certified teacher in area schools. Students will complete practicums with both special education teachers and elementary teachers. Students will be prepared to obtain the required Missouri teacher certification.
Career outcomes
Graduates will be prepared to teach as a special education teacher in grades K-12 or as an elementary teacher in grades 1-6. Graduates may also choose to teach at alternative education locations.
