Library Resources

The databases listed below contain many subjects and are a good starting point for research:

Computers

The library offers laptops for check out. Each laptop comes pre-loaded with a standard suite of programs. Laptops with the following programs installed are available by request:

  • Lockdown Browser
  • Python
  • Quickbooks
  • SPSS

Laptops can be checked out for 6 hours, 7 days, or 30 days.

The Avila library expects all computers and equipment to be returned on time, substantial fines can accumulate on overdue items.

The library also offers laptop chargers, mice, ethernet cords, and laptop carrying cases for checkout.

Other Equipment

Texas Instruments graphing calculators can be checked out from the library for an entire semester.

Headphones can also be checked out. These headphones can be used with library computers to view DVDs or listen to computer audio.

The library also offers the following A/V equipment for checkout:

  • Camcorder
  • Webcam
  • Tripod

Print Books

The best way to find library books is to search online. Use the search bar on this page, or by visiting the Avila Online Catalog.

Most library books are stored in our Auxiliary Stacks. Circulation Desk staff are happy to retrieve books from the stacks for you to view or check out.

The library’s reference, oversized, and education collections are located in the library and are easily browsable.

Requesting Books

Books can be requested from the Avila catalog by clicking the Request button on the book’s page.

In addition to the library’s many online databases, over 100 print magazines and journals are available for browsing in the Learning Commons.

Avila patrons are welcome to read journals while in the library. Avila faculty may check out journals at the Circulation Desk.

The library keeps the 2 most recent years of each journal in the Learning commons. Older editions are stored in the library’s Auxiliary Stacks. Circulation Desk staff are happy to retrieve them for you.

The library subscribes to the Kansas City Star, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Today’s edition of each paper can be borrowed from the Circulation Desk. Newspapers from the previous 12 months can be found next to the print journals.

Avila patrons are welcome to read newspapers while in the library. Avila faculty may check out newspapers at the Circulation Desk.

Videos

The library provides you access to 37,000 academic and general interest films with Films on Demand.

DVDs

The library also has over 200 popular DVDs available for use by students, staff and faculty.

Faculty DVDs are reserved for faculty and staff. Students are welcome to watch faculty DVDs while in the library.

All Avila patrons are welcome to check out student DVDs.

Both student and faculty DVDs are browsable in the library and online. Use the search box on this page or visit the Avila Online Catalog.

If you need access to an article or book that is not found in our collection, consider requesting it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

Before you submit an interlibrary loan, please ensure that the requested item is not in the Avila collection.

Requests for articles are typically filled within 7 days, requests for books within 14. We will make every effort to deliver requested items to patrons as soon as possible.

  • Avila Books: right away.
  • KC-Towers Books: 3-5 days.
  • MOBIUS In-State Books: 5-7 days.
  • MOBIUS Out of State Books: 7-10 days.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Articles: 4-7 days.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Books: 7-14 days.

Avila librarians are available on Navigate for appointments and walk-in assistance. Make a Navigate appointment with a librarian by selecting the option for Academic Success/Tutoring.

When accessing library databases from a non-Avila computer, we use a proxy server to verify your Avila credentials in order to provide you with full access to library resources.

Logging On

The login information for the proxy server is the same server as it is for other Avila programs such as Canvas, MyAU and Navigate.

If you are not able to sign in, please double-check your information and try again. If problems persist, call (815.501.3621) or stop by the library Circulation Desk.

If an error prevents access to any library database, please contact the Electronic Resources Librarian (Tom Pfeifer) for further assistance.

Books, computers and more can be easily renewed online. To do this, select the Renew Your Materials tab or select the link below:

To log in, enter your full name in the Your Name field. In the Unique Campus ID field, enter your username + AU on the end (for example: smith123456AU). Your username will be the same one you use to log on to Canvas, MyAU or Navigate, plus AU.

Once logged in, click on the menu option that shows your currently checked out items. You will see a list of your currently checked out items, including due dates. Simply click Renew All or select specific items to renew and click Renew Marked.

Some items will not be renewable online, due to checkout rules or patron holds. If unable to renew your items online, please stop by the library’s circulation desk or call us (816.501.3621) and we will renew your items if possible.

NOTE: The Avila library will be ending fines on most items beginning with the Spring 2023 semester. Replacement fees will still be required for lost or damaged items. Contact the library circulation desk for details.

The library assesses fines for overdue items and replacement fees for lost or damaged items. Fines are assessed when you return an item, and vary from 10 cents a day for books, to a 20-dollar minimum on most laptops and computing equipment.

If you have outstanding fines, please stop by the Circulation Desk to pay them off. Unpaid fines or fees may result in your balance being transferred to your Avila account or a hold being placed. The library can only accept cash as payment for fines at this time.

If you are unable to pay your outstanding fines or fees, please contact the Library Director (Rebecca Nichols) for assistance.

The Avila Library has 6 study rooms and 2 larger classroom spaces that can be reserved:

Reservations for all rooms other than the Hager Family Study Room (1) require a group of 3 or more.

All other desktop computers, tables, chairs and booths in the library are first-come, first-serve. If a room isn’t reserved, it reverts to first-come, first-serve as well.

Each semester Avila students recieve $30.00 in print credits ($35.00 for graduate students, faculty and staff). Unless these credits have all been used, no payment is necessary.

You can add more print credits to your account at the library circulation desk. We can only accept cash.

Grayscale 1-sided – 10¢/page

Grayscale 2-sided – 20¢/page

Color 1-sided – 15¢/page

Color 2-sided – 30¢/page

How to Print

You can print to a library printer the normal way from an Avila desktop computer. You can also use our printers from your personal computer with print.avila.edu. It’s quick and easy to print from your personal computer, but there are a few limitations.

Print.avila.edu Requirements

When printing from through print.avila.edu, the website decides on the output format for you. This means that your document will be printed double-sided in greyscale. Also, the website doesn’t accept Microsoft word. You will need to convert word documents to PDF in order to print. The library Circulation Desk is happy to assist you with this.

Printing with Print.avila.edu

  1. Log in to print.avila.edu (using the same credentials as for Canvas, MyAU or Navigate)
  2. In the left-side menu, click Web Print.
  3. On the next page, click the Submit a Job button.
  4. Select LIB-SLOAN as your printer and click on Print Options.
  5. Choose how many copies of your document you need and click Upload Documents.
  6. Upload your document and click Upload & Complete.
  7. Collect your printed document from the Sloan Printer (located across from Study Room 1).

EBSCO app

EBSCO databases are the heart of the Avila library’s online collections. EBSCO Mobile lets you take hundreds of thousands of books and journals with you wherever you go. You can also save articles to read later, and sort by full text and peer reviewed materials.

Computer Programs

The Avila IT department offers many programs to the Avila community at no cost.

Microsoft Office

Office

Avila students, faculty and staff can download Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and several other programs.

Tutoring is available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. The Tutoring Center is located in the back of the library, next to the Writing Center. The sign-in kiosk for study jams is also located in the Tutoring Center. Specialized tutoring for Math and Science can be found in O’Reilly Hall, Room 222.
