Directors Note:
When THE MOUSETRAP opened in London in 1952, the expectation was that it would be lucky to run 75 performances. Now, 73 years later, the mystery continues at over 13,000 performances and climbing. Excepting the COVID shutdown, that original production has continued uninterrupted since opening.
Though it stands as an icon of the murder-mystery genre, its plot alone cannot account for this persistent and continued popularity. Beyond the standards of the genre, we find in The Mousetrap a tale of guilt, trauma, and coming to terms with the past. Written on the heels of World War II, the collective trauma buried just below the surface of London society came bubbling up in the everyday horrors of the homefront. As they fight to maintain ideas of themselves, the characters each, in their own way, are confronted with the dissonance of their presented self and the layers beneath.
All wrapped in a tale of intrigue, suspicion, and murder, The Mousetrap connects us to our own experience through the lens of mystery. Given our own opportunities, how do we deal with the past and who will we choose to be as a result?
Thank you for spending this time with us as we uncover the layers beneath, and please enjoy your time in Monkswell Manor Guest House!
