100+ Years of Academic Inspiration

Why fully online and low-residency delivery learning?

Since its beginning as a two-year college for women in 1916, Avila University has prioritized serving first-generation and other under-served populations in Catholic intellectual traditions. Founded and inspired by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ), Avila is a vibrant, four-year university providing liberal arts, professional, undergraduate, and graduate education. A values-based community of learning, social justice, and the charism of the CSJ are at the foundation of the institution. Today, the University prepares students for responsible, lifelong contributions to the global community through more than 54 undergraduate majors, minors, and concentrations and six master’s-level graduate programs.

  • Over the last three years, the School of Nursing graduates have averaged a 96.68% NCLEX-RN first-pass rate.
  • The School of Natural and Applied Sciences, the School of Psychology and Cognitive Science, and the School of Social Science all provide undergraduate research opportunities. Avila undergraduate students go on to present their research at regional and national conferences.
  • The University guarantees all majors a research or internship experience opportunity as part of a University initiative. That same initiative, the Avila Promise, helps pay for their expenses at these conferences.

Hi, my name is Caitlin. I’m a second-year student in the Graduate Psychology program, and I’m also an RA on the 16th floor of Wiley.
The reason I came to Avila was because I heard about their Graduate Psychology program through a relative. She was saying that the program was really good and that maybe I should apply and see what happens.
And so what I liked the most about the program—I mean, honestly—are the professors. The professors are very nice and willing and open to help you learn the material, and so they go out of their way to help you in your future career.
What I think about Avila, honestly, is actually the people here. I’ve made so many great lifelong friends here at Avila. Also, people here are in general just really friendly. You’ll walk to class and people will just smile and say hi to you. And also people are always inviting you — they’ll always invite you to programs on campus or just hanging out and talking, getting to know each other better.
So that’s like my favorite thing about everybody here — everyone is very nice and friendly.

My name is Regan Esterworks. I am a senior here at Avila. I play softball here, and my major is history with a minor in secondary education and women’s studies.

I chose to come to Avila because of the small class sizes. I think with a smaller class size you get more of a relationship with your professor, and that’s really nice when you need help with homework or anything.

I also was really interested in the softball program. They were successful in past years, and I was really excited to be coached by someone really great.

The thing I like the most about Avila is probably the people I meet here. You make some great connections. The school is really great about getting you involved, and you always meet people in your classes. And if you’re on a sports team, you kind of come in with like a tight-knit group of friends to begin with.

Being a student athlete at Avila is super rewarding. There are a lot of people at Avila who are student athletes. Softball for me is really fun — the girls are amazing. We were really tight-knit through the girls. We get up early together, we condition together, and we work out together—always early mornings—and then we go to class. And it can be tough sometimes, but it’s super rewarding. I love the sport, and I wouldn’t know what to do without it.
