Avila University’s Own, Dr. Shandon Boone ’20
At Avila University, we believe in empowering students to pursue bold goals, and Dr. Shandon Boone is living proof of what happens when ambition meets support. A 2020 graduate with a degree in Health & Professional Sciences, Dr. Boone is now a thriving General Dentist in Shawnee, Kansas, serving patients and transforming smiles every day.
Preparing for a Purpose-Driven Career
Dr. Boone chose Avila for one reason: our strong science programs and the mentors who stand behind them. From the moment he arrived on campus, he made it clear that his future was in dentistry, and the Avila community rallied around that dream. “I knew I wanted to go to dental school, and all my counselors and advisors helped me reach that goal. Avila already had a strong relationship with UMKC, which made the path to dental school very accessible.”
,Dr. Shandon Boone. Not only did faculty ensure he met every prerequisite, but they also championed him every step of the way. That guidance propelled him directly to UMKC School of Dentistry, a partnership strengthened by Avila’s Kansas City location and academic reputation.
Learning by Doing
Avila’s hands-on approach to education gave Dr. Boone the opportunity to explore the profession up close. A specialized research course built in dedicated time to leave campus and shadow professionals, from pediatric to general and orthodontic dentistry. “It was a great class that gave me real time to go off-campus and see what I would be getting into. It helped confirm that dentistry was truly what I wanted to pursue.” These experiences gave him clarity, confidence, and valuable exposure before entering graduate school.
Leadership Learned on the Court
As a student-athlete and member of Avila Men’s Basketball, Dr. Boone sharpened the qualities that now define his professional life: discipline, accountability, time management, and leadership. “Basketball taught me how to be a leader, to be accountable, and to manage my time. Dental school is a heavy workload, but I already knew how to balance my priorities. The discipline I learned as an athlete directly prepared me for life after sports.” His dedication to both academics and athletics built a foundation of resilience, helping him excel through the rigorous demands of dental school. Today, Dr. Boone represents the heart of Avila’s mission, a leader grounded in service, prepared through opportunity, and driven by purpose.
We are proud to celebrate his achievements and the impact he continues to make in the community. Congratulations, Dr. Boone, and thank you for showing future Eagles what’s possible when you Have the Audacity.
