Your gift, your choice,
your opportunity

With your gift today, you honor students as they learn, grow and serve the Dear Neighbor without distinction. Your generosity makes a critical difference in the next generation of Avila students.

Be a philanthropic leader at Avila! When you support Avila with gifts totaling $1,000 and above, during each academic year, you will become a member of the President’s Circle giving society.

Gifts of appreciated securities may offer better tax benefits than gifts of cash, such as:

  • Entitling you to a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted securities as of the date of your gift.
  • Eliminating capital gains taxes that would ordinarily become due if you had sold the appreciated securities on the open market and donated the proceeds from the sale.
  • Claiming your charitable deduction against up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. Any unused deductions can be carried forward over the next five years.
  • Helping you achieve your long-term financial objective of reducing your income and estate taxes.

If you have depreciated securities and want to donate them, you may find it more advantageous to sell the securities first and contribute the proceeds as opposed to donating the securities outright. This strategy should allow you to claim a deduction for both the loss from the sale of the securities as well as the charitable gift.

If you are considering donating stock that is subject to a cash merger or tender offer, it’s important to note that you will be subject to capital gains taxes even though the shares were transferred to us before the tender offer became effective.

You should always consult with your financial advisor before initiating a charitable gift arrangement.

If you are 71 ½ years of age or older, you can give any amount up to a maximum of $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to Avila without having to pay income taxes on your gift. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but is also referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Why Consider This Gift?

  • Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.
  • Beginning in the year you turn 72, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).
  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), administered by a financial services company or a community foundation, allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to easily support Avila and other charities.

The new tax code will make DAFs a great tool for non-itemizers who wish to bundle their charitable gifts in one year (in order to get the tax deduction) while ensuring that Avila will continue to receive annual support.

Planning for the future and creating the legacy you wish to leave is one of the most effective ways to ensure a lasting impact. Making a gift in your will or living trust, known as a bequest, is the simplest way to guarantee that your legacy endures. Your gift may be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder after all other provisions are specified.

If you have named Avila University in your will or trust, please let us know so we can ensure that your gift is used according to your wishes. Notifying us of your plans will enable us to plan for the use of your future gift. However, if you prefer to remain anonymous, we will keep your name and gift in strict confidence.

For additional ways to make a planned gift including Charitable Lead Trust Gifts, IRA/Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designations, and Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations, please contact Amy Drouin at 816.501.3727 or amy.drouin@avila.edu for more information.

Many companies will match charitable contributions made by employees or their spouses and, in some cases, double or triple the value of your gift. Consult with your employer to determine if this is an option. The matching gift must be initiated by you. When Avila receives the paperwork from your employer, the Advancement team will verify that your gift was made and complete the necessary documentation.

Matching gifts should be sent to Avila University, Advancement Department, 11901 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145. Federal Tax Id #: 44-0617326
