In Michelle Tyrene Johnson’s Buried Roots, a young Black college student and his genealogy professor form an unexpected connection that brings long-buried family histories to the surface. Funny, moving, and deeply human, Buried Roots explores race, class, education, identity, belonging, and the inequities that shape our opportunities. Avila is especially proud to present the work of Kansas City playwright Michelle Tyrene Johnson, a graduate of St. Teresa’s Academy—sharing Avila’s deep connection to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
