Department of English: Degree Requirements

Depth and Diversity.

Avila University offers a dynamic English major that encourages students to look deeply into texts while examining them in their relation to their context. The English major offers students a choice between two emphases: Literature, and Writing and Rhetoric. Both emphases build from Major Requirements that provide students with a foundation in academic writing, research, theory, and criticism. The Literature Emphasis presents students with a diverse selection of fictive and literary texts, focusing on students’ ability to interpret these texts within a specific context. The Writing and Rhetoric Emphasis builds composition and interpretive skills in both creative and persuasive writing.
