After a shipwreck separates twins Viola and Sebastian, each believes the other lost to the sea. Alone in a strange land, Viola disguises herself as a young man, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino. What follows is a tangled web of longing and mistaken identity: Orsino pines for Olivia, Olivia falls for Cesario, and Viola, in disguise, quietly falls in love with Orsino.
