Help Avila University with a gift from your IRA
If you take a distribution from your IRA this year, you may end up paying higher taxes and potentially move into a higher tax bracket. Instead, consider rolling over part of your IRA’s required minimum distribution (RMD) to benefit Avila University while reducing your tax burden and supporting our mission.
How to Make an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
If you plan to make an unrestricted gift to Avila University, please contact us in advance so we can expect your donation and provide a tax receipt upon receipt.
If your gift includes special instructions or is intended for a specific campaign or department, please follow the steps below:
- Download the IRA Request for Distribution (QCD) form
- Send the form to your IRA administrator with instructions to send the distribution to Avila University. Please also email a copy to our Advancement Office at Christopher.hotchkiss@avila.edu.
- Avila will ensure the proceeds are directed to the area of the university you’ve designated
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our Advancement Office at (816) 501-3602.
As always, we recommend consulting your attorney or financial advisors regarding your specific tax and financial situation before making any decisions.
Who Can Make IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) and What Are the Benefits?
Once you reach age 70 ½, you can make Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) of up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as Avila University. These distributions allow you to support your chosen cause while potentially reducing your tax burden, as you won’t pay taxes on the amount transferred to the charity.
Although Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) do not need to be taken until age 73 (following the SECURE Act 2.0), you can still make a QCD starting at age 70 ½. Here are the key details:

- QCDs must come from traditional IRAs and be transferred directly to a qualified charity.
- Distributions cannot be made to donor-advised funds or private foundations.
Tax Benefits
- IRA QCDs are excluded from taxable income, which can be especially beneficial for taxpayers who do not itemize deductions.
- You can donate up to $100,000 per year using a QCD.
- Your QCD can count towards your RMD, reducing your taxable income while fulfilling your charitable goals.
Please note that withdrawals from other retirement plans, such as 401(k)s, are treated differently and may result in taxable income. If you’re considering using a QCD or have questions about your RMD, consult your IRA administrator.
