Avila University Student Scholar Day Highlights Student Achievements

(May 12, 2017) KANSAS CITY, MO – Students from a wide range of disciplines shared their individual achievements at the annual Student Scholar Day on the Avila campus. The all-day event celebrated the students’ dedication to learning and the high level of scholarship that transpires at the university.

Of the 44 students participating, there were three overall winners:

  • Best Presentation was awarded to Hanae Ishikawa, Communication Advertising & Public Relations major, for her “Veterans’ Voices Project Media Kit.
  • Biology majors Ashtyn Sills and Jackie Jimenez were awarded Best Poster Presentation for their poster “Analysis of Gene Expression after Inhibition of the Hedgehog Signaling Pathway with Cyclopamine in Planaria.”
  • The Alumni Award for Outstanding Presentation was awarded to Pre-Health and Biochemistry/Molecular Biology major Brian Murphy for his presentation “Determination and Differentiation of Sugar Content in Gin.”

University faculty and Scholar Day committee members set six specific goals for the event:

  1. Promote and encourage student contributions to scholarly activity across the campus.
  2. Recognize and reward outstanding student achievements and scholarly activity.
  3. Promote interdisciplinary academic interaction among students and faculty.
  4. Reinforce the breadth of learning that characterizes a quality formal education.
  5. Support Avila University’s educational efforts regarding the importance of communication skills.
  6. Enhance community awareness of the high level of scholarship at Avila University.

University Closed Today

Due to weather and road conditions, Avila University will be closed on Tuesday, February 20th, 2018.

Classes and events are canceled and offices will not be open today.

Overdose: The Opioid Epidemic film screening has been rescheduled for March 6.

Avila University is seeking comments from the public about the University in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. The University will host a visit February 26-27, 2018 with a team representing the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Avila University has been accredited by HLC since 1946. The team will review the institution’s ongoing ability to meet HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation.
