Avila University recently raised more than $1 million in student scholarships at its 41st Annual Steer Dinner & Auction. Funds raised at the annual event directly benefit Avila University students, ensuring that 98 percent of undergraduate students receive some form of financial assistance that enable them to receive a values-based education.

More than 650 guests attended the event hosted by honorary chairs Bob and Michelle Hunter, and event chairs DJ and Ann O’Hare. Together, they raised $1,006,322 to support Avila University students through scholarship. There was also a touching tribute to the late S. Olive Louise Dallavis, past president of Avila from 1961-1985.

President Ron Slepitza recognized each of the chairs during the event and thanked them for their support.

“I am grateful for the leadership and support of our honorary and event chairs, and by the efforts of our alumni, donors and friends to raise more than $1 million for student scholarships at this year’s Steer Dinner. Their deep commitment to education helps make the Avila experience possible for our students,” Slepitza said.

For 41 years, Avila University has been giving back to its students and watching them succeed in the process. In total, the Steer Dinner has raised more than $11 million in scholarships since its first event in 1977.

Students personally thanked donors in a video shown during the event. “I’m the first one in my immediate family to attend a four-year university,” said junior Keegan Selley. “I would like to thank all of the donors that are able to give scholarships. They have no idea the significance.”
