Study Abroad: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Date: March 6, October 3
Amount: $5,000
Eligibility:

  • Must be pell-grant eligible
  • Is applying to or has been accepted by a study abroad program that is at least 4 weeks in one country (programs going to multiple countries are eligible if you will be in one country for at least 4 consecutive weeks)
  • Preferred: high financial need, diverse ethnic background, or first generation student
  • Must be able to show how your study abroad experience connects to your career and personal goals

Requirements:

  • Transcript
  • Essay answers on what you hope to gain from your experience
  • Academic and financial aid advisor submission for online section
  • Service experiences are expected after receiving the scholarship

Beatrice Priscilla Steward Scholarship

Amount: $3,000
Eligibility:

  • Of African American descent
  • 2.5 GPA minimum
  • 17-30 years of age
  • Preferred: first generation, resident of KC metro, participated in not-for-profit youth development program, presides over single income household, financial need

Pastor Otis L. Cobbins Sr. Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Eligibility:

  • A graduate of a high school in the KC metro area (Johnson, Wyandotte, Clay, Jackson, or Platte counties)
  • In good academic standing
  • Financial need
  • Exemplify honest, integrity, hard work, strong character, love of humanity, servant to community and family, trustworthiness, and commitment

Requirements:

  • College acceptance letter
  • Letter of recommendation (academic) from your high school or a representative at Avila
  • Letter of recommendation (character) from someone not related to you
  • Essay describing how you meet the character qualities listed under eligibility 

Board of Directors Scholarship: MO-KAN-NE

Date: March 25
Amount: $750-$1,000
Eligibility:

  • First generation, low-income, or disabled TRIO student
  • Cumulative GPA above a 2.5
  • Involvement in co-curricular or community activities

Requirements:

  • Current transcript
  • Essay (600 words)
  • Must have TRIO staff nominate you online (SSS can nominate a limited number of students each year so nominations will be done first-come, first-serve).  Nominator must write a letter of recommendation. 

Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) Scholarship: MO-KAN-NE

Eligibility:

  • Current TRIO student
  • Cumulative GPA above a 2.5
  • Strong leadership abilities in community

Requirements:

EOA Silas Purnell Scholarship: MO-KAN-NE

Black Community Scholarship Fund

Date: March 28
Amount: $5,000
Eligibility:

  • African American heritage
  • Reside in the KC metro area (Jackson, Platte, Clay, Cass, Wyandotte, or Johnson counties)
  • Priority given to degrees in healthcare, education, youth development, liberal and performing arts, or stem
  • 2.0 GPA minimum

Requirements:

  • Essay
  • Community and civic service record
  • College acceptance letter
  • Personal statement (250 words or less)
  • If awarded, you will be expected to give 16 hours of community service (8 a semester)

Second Chance Scholarship

Date: March 30
Amount: Varies (is renewable)
Eligibility:

  • Have graduated from a school in the KC KS or MO school district
  • Have experiences some adversity
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to high school seniors, but current college students have won (and founder is an Avila alum)

Requirements:

  • Essay (500 words)
  • Proof of financial need
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • If awarded, recipient is expected to complete 10 hours of community service, meet with a community mentor, and report to the scholarship board annually

  • Have graduated from a school in KS or MO
  • Has or had a family member diagnosed with skin cancer

  • Evidence that you are using university support to meet learning needs

  • Essay on how school meets your needs and how you are using those services
  • Description of special learning needs with an IEP

The HSF Scholarship

Eligibility:

  • Hispanic heritage

Eligibility:

  • Between ages of 17 and 25
  • Resident of KC, MO
  • Household income of 80% or less than the median income of KC MO households

Requirements:

  • 300 word essay
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Copy of high school transcript or GED certificate
  • Copy of FAFSA
  • Most recent copy of tax info (1040EZ, 1040A, or 1040 IRS forms filed by all members of the household)

Isler Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility:

  • Must be a rising Jr/Sr
  • Elementary or middle school eduation major planning to teach in the humanities
