Congratulations Class of 2020

You have been sent a welcome email from Avila University and Merit Pages to join a new service highlighting your graduation and academic accomplishments.  Merits Pages is a social media and news platform that is helping us to recognize your accomplishments at Avila. We will upload into your Merit profile your name, degree and where you are from.  You will be able to add to your profile your picture and any other honors you have received along your college path. 

In the fall during Homecoming weekend (Oct 8 – 11, 2020), you will be honored at a recognition celebration for the 2020 Graduates.  More information on this will follow at a later date.

You will also have the opportunity to walk in the 2021 Graduation if you chose.  Please email to confirm you will be walking in 2021. 

Diploma information:

Once all grades are in, the registrar will confer your degree. Due to the limited access to campus, all diplomas will be mailed out on Monday, June 15th. Please make sure the address given on the Graduation Application is up to date. Questions regarding Diplomas please email

Looking Ahead: Due to the COVID-19 virus impact on large gatherings, Avila University will not hold a commencement ceremony this year. Students completing degrees in December 2019, March/May/June/August 2020 will be eligible to participate in the May 2021 graduation ceremony.

Information for Mobility-Impaired Guests

Avila University and the Kansas City Convention Center do not provide wheelchairs for mobility-impaired guests.  It is strongly encouraged that guests make arrangements prior to Commencement Weekend to ensure availability.  If special accommodations (ceremony seating) are required for your guest/s, please contact Janine Urness in the Academic Affairs office at 816.501.3758.
Mobility impaired guests may be dropped off at the Kansas City Convention Center Entrance for Exhibit hall E (located at 601 W 14th St. (2300 Lobby))  with a companion to accompany them. Upon entrance into the event area, there will be hostesses available to identify seating for guest with wheelchairs and other motorized chairs.

For safety purposes all walk-ways inside the Kansas City Convention must remain clear, therefore individuals with strollers and large bags will be seated in a special area.

GradImages will be photographing all graduates at the commencement ceremony. Visit their website,, and click on Pre-Event Email Registration. Enter your email and up to 6 emails of loved ones who would like to share in your accomplishment by viewing and ordering your photos.

Personal audio-video taping and photography during the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies is allowed but keeping in alignment with the following:   

**Family and friends wishing to take photographs of candidates are asked to do so either before or after ceremonies.

**Personal audio-video taping and photography during the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies are prohibited in the graduate seating area or by the platform.

Commencement Etiquette

The Commencement exercise is a formal academic ceremony. We ask that all guests respect the ceremony, graduates and other guests by behaving in the dignified manner that the occasion merits. In keeping with decorum and the Avila tradition, we ask that guests adhere to the following guidelines.

 Key Points

  1. Keep all confetti, balloons, and noisemakers outside of the venue 

  2. Food, beverages, or rude and disruptive behavior will not be permitted. Security personnel will be on-site to enforce these restrictions and prevent disruptive behavior

  3. Cellular phones should be turned to their silent operating modes to help ensure that all guests can hear and enjoy the graduation activities 

  4. During the reading of the names of the graduates, we ask guests to be considerate in their applause so that all names are heard clearly and the ceremony is not disrupted. We ask that you express your excitement in ways that will not prevent others from hearing the speakers and enjoying the ceremony 

  5. Please remain in your seats for the duration of the ceremony until after the recessional. Please do not block the aisles or passageways by attempting to greet or take photos with graduates

All Bachelor and Master Degree candidates participating in the commencement exercises are REQUIRED to attend this practice session. Caps and gowns are not worn. Practice lasts approximately one hour.

Sending Ceremony & Reception

There are no tickets required for the Sending Ceremony, but we do request that graduates submit a reservation.  Click the button below to make your reservation today.

The Sending Ceremony is our baccalaureate celebration that all graduates, Bachelor’s and Master’s, are encouraged to attend with families. The ceremony celebrates our Avila Heritage and has become an important part of our Avila tradition. Graduates process into this ceremony as a class. The 35 minute ceremony is followed by a big reception (food, beer and wine are served) where it has become common that families have the opportunity to meet faculty and staff.  The reception is co-hosted by Campus Ministry and the Avila University Alumni Association. 

Graduates are asked to dress business casual, no caps and gowns. Graduates should meet in the Pavilion at 5:30 p.m.

Please plan to make this Avila celebration a part of your graduation weekend.

Please allow two hours for the ceremony.  

*CAPS AND GOWNS: When caps and gowns are ready for pickup in the bookstore, an email will be sent to your Avila email and the private email address you provided on your graduation application.

Graduate check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.  All graduates should allow time to park and be checked in no later than 9:20 a.m. Graduates not checked in by 9:20 a.m. may not be allowed to walk.  Detailed instructions will be given at Graduation Practice on May 8.

Audit / Application Process

No less than two semesters and no more than four semesters; you should log into MyAU and request an audit to be completed for your degree.

Once you have completed this through MyAU, please allow four to six weeksfor the audit to be completed in the Registration & Student Records Office. You will receive a communication from the Registration Office indicating your requirements through your Avila e-mail. Your academic advisor/s will also receive a copy of your audit results. 

After receiving your audit results, please make an appointment with your academic advisor/s to review and determine when you will be able to complete the requirements. This will determine your graduation conferred date.

A one-time graduation fee of $175 will be charged to student accounts when the application is received. Late fees will be charged to students who apply after the above deadlines.

Graduation Honors

Graduation Honors


Graduation honors are awarded for baccalaureate degrees only. Honors for the first baccalaureate degree will be based on all work completed, including transfer work. Honors for the second baccalaureate degree will be based on Avila University work only. Students must have completed at least 64 hours of coursework at Avila after the completion of the first degree to be eligible for honors.

Graduation honors are based on the cumulative grade point average as follows:
Summa cum laude ............. 3.900 – 4.000
Magna cum laude............... 3.700 – 3.899
Cum laude .......................... 3.500 – 3.699

Honors announced at the graduation ceremony will be based on the work completed the fall semester prior to May graduation. If a student did not attend the fall semester, the announced honors will be based on the grade point average from the last semester of attendance prior to the fall semester.

Official honors will be recorded on the student’s diploma and transcript. Official honors are based on the final grade point average after the last semester of coursework is completed. Official honors may be different than those announced at graduation ceremony if a student’s grade point average changes the status during the last semester of coursework.

Double Majors/Second Degree

Double Major and Degree Conferred


When two majors are completed in different areas (e.g. B.S., B.A.), the student must designate which major is the first major, which will indicate which degree will be conferred.  In addition to meeting all requirements for the first major, the student must complete a minimum of fifteen (15) credits in the second major that are not already used to satisfy requirements for the first major requirements for core.

Second Degree Requirements for earning two degrees to be awarded simultaneously:

  • Completion of a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours at Avila University in addition to the minimum 128 hours required for the first baccalaureate degree for a total of 158 hours.

  • Completion of both majors with at least 12 upper-division hours in each major taken at Avila University; a “C” grade is required in each upper-division course in the majors.

Requirements for earning a second degree after having been awarded a baccalaureate degree:

  • Completion of a minimum of thirty (30) additional semester hours at Avila University after the awarding of the first baccalaureate degree.

  • Completion of a major with at least 12 upper-division hours in the major taken at Avila University; a “C” grade is required in each upper-division course in the major.

  • Completion of the core curriculum as stated in the academic catalog.

Effective October 15, 2017, the graduation fee is $175.

You must have requested a Bachelor’s degree audit, received your results, and discussed with your academic advisor/s before applying to graduate.

Once you receive your graduation audit results and review with your advisor to determine your graduation conferred date, then you can submit your Graduation Application in MyAU.  You will receive a confirmation email once you submit your Graduation Application in MyAU.
