Grant to help students explore vocation
Avila University has been selected to receive a NetVUE Program Development Grant in the amount of $50,000 to be used Jan. 1, 2013-Jan. 31, 2015, the Council of Independent Colleges announced. Avila is among 33 NetVUE institutions selected in the first round of recipients of this award, meant to deepen the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation among undergraduate students.

Avila University was awarded a grant of $250,000 over four years by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Avila University recognized and thanked several of its largest benefactors, honoring them as inaugural members of the Father Jean Pierre Medaille Society during a President’s Circle reception Sept. 27 on the Jeanne Hamilton Olofson Plaza. The distinguished group – the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Tom and Jeanne Olofson ’92, ’94, ‘11, Bob Hartsook/Hartsook Companies Inc., The Goppert Foundation, Vita M. Goppert ’72, ‘09, The Kresge Foundation and The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation – became the first induction class into the Fr. Medaille Society as contributors of $1 million or more to Avila. Former Avila University pitcher Chris Thomas is wasting no time moving his way toward the big leagues. Thomas, a 6-foot-2 right-hander from Liberty, Mo. who finished his collegiate eligibility at Avila last spring, was promoted Aug. 1 from the St. Louis Cardinals’ rookie league team to its A club in Batavia, N.Y.
