    Dr. Darrin Smith oversees academic and co-curricular programming for undergraduate and graduate majors in the College of Science and Health.  Responsibilities include departmental strategic planning, program review, curriculum development and assessment, and budget oversight.

    Dr. Smith, as a Professor of Chemistry, has teaching interests including general and analytical chemistry along with chemical instrumentation courses.  He has presented research at national conferences for the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS).

    Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in analytical chemistry where his research focus was energetic studies of ionic collisions in tandem mass spectrometry. He was a recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Post-doctoral fellowship also at the University of Arizona in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology where he participated in mass spectrometry proteomic investigations. Dr. Smith has co-authored many peer-reviewed journal publications pertaining to development of mass spectrometry methods with ambient ionization or chromatography for the qualitative and quantitative analysis on a wide variety of samples. He has also co-authored a book chapter titled ‘Mass Spectrometry Applications in Forensic Science’ that is contained in the Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry: Applications, Theory, and Instrumentation.
