First Responder. Super student.
Mallory Super knows firsthand what it means to handle difficult situations. Working as a Kansas City, Kansas paramedic firefighter, Super has discovered the fire in her heart to help her fellow firefighter. "Being with the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department has begun to shape the passion I have for helping others and allowed me to hone many skills, Super said. "I have been through a good deal of what they have experienced, so I can share in their trials and tribulations while being an example of what can happen with proper assistance and support.”
As a graduate counseling psychology student in the School of Psychology at Avila, Super is inspired to continue growing and reaching for knowledge. She has become a lifelong learner, who wants to keep up on the most pertinent trends, treatments, and information.
Through my psychology coursework, I have realized that my passion lies in helping my fellow firefighter," said Super.
“I have developed an internal drive to go beyond my normal helping role and see how I can better serve and further my purpose, as well as helping others to do the same.“
Developing a mentorship with Avila faculty is what can turn the classroom into an exceptional learning experience. Interacting with Leah K. Gensheimer, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and community psychologist has made a major impact on Super.
Dr. Gensheimer was there for me every step of the way - challenging me to alter my views, try different methods, and allow myself to do some growing while I was at it!” said Super. “Her supporting role continues even now, which I am beyond grateful for.”
After completing her graduate degree in 2021, Super hopes to be able to apply her counseling psychology education and skills within her own department, serving as peer support coordinator on a full-time basis. Super said, "Avila has instilled a sense of quiet confidence within me. The coursework has challenged me in ways I hadn’t experienced before, but that has helped me to grow as a person and a professional.”
