VisCom Professor conducts Digital Storytelling Series as Visiting Artist at the Paseo Academy of Performing and Visual Arts
Dr. J. Anthony Snorgrass conducted ‘Lay(AR)ing Art with Interactive Experiences’ a customized series of classes that introduced students to the emergence of digital technology driven art – photography, photo- painting, digital-sculpture, 3-D imaging, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Over 25 students attended the sessions at the Paseo Academy of Performing and Visual Arts April 10-13, 2017.
Snorgrass shared, “Students and educators are constantly challenged to find the optimal balance between natural and human-made elements while creating opportunities where students can make strong statements and share stories in their own voice. This is where fascination can be blended with technology to form truly creative inspirations using the algorithms in apps to create eclectic Mixed Media-AR-VR-experiences”.
During this series students were taught how to transform flat 2D photographic images, paintings and other works to a layered Augmented Reality experience where by using digital apps they could engage viewers far beyond what the eye can see and in some cases even create 360 panoramic views just by moving their smart phones and peripherals.
This series was designed to be a fun, creative and cool way to create an immersive experience for students using their own creations. The National Endowment of the Arts, Art Works, The Gem Cultural & Educational Center, and the Missouri Arts Council sponsored this Visiting Artist program.
Pamela Sahl, Visual Arts Chair at the Paseo Academy of Fine & Performing Arts Arts shared that “…the students were truly impressed by the works of Dr. Snorgrass and excited to try their hand at creating their own works from stories based upon their very own experiences. It was truly an enjoyable and expansive educational endeavor for each of them. We extend a hardy Thank You to “Dr.J” from all of us involved in the project!”
Snorgrass specializes in new media, augmented reality applications, accessibility, universal design strategies, brand cultivation, and diversity marketing. With the proliferation of technology in the 21st century and the “app-revolution”, Dr. J. Anthony Snorgrass insists that sharing and teaching these techniques to students will further expand both their understanding and as well the practice of this integrated art form, often referred to as “interactive digital storytelling”.
