Communication Scholarship

Communication Scholarships

Open to all Communication students majoring in Advertising & Public Relations, Sports, Communication or Film & Digital Media. Students are awarded grants up to $1,000 annually.  


Requirements

  1. Full-Time Student majoring in Communication
  2. Regular Admissions Status (If student is provisional admit, student must attain regular status at the completion of first academic year.)
  3. Personal Interview with Communication Faculty
  4. Letter of Recommendation from High School or College Instructor, Counselor, or other appropriate representative (internship or work supervisor, coaches, adult media club director, etc.)
  5. Work hours in the Communication department based on grant amount awarded.

In order to renew, you must

  1. Enroll in minimum 9 hours of CO credits first academic year and minimum 15 hours of CO credits each year thereafter.
  2. Maintain Full-time Student Status
  3. Maintain a 3.0 in communication classes taken at Avila.
  4. After the second academic year student must present a DVD/portfolio of work for review and renewal.

Newspaper (Talon News Media) Scholarships

Requirements

  1. Full-Time Student
  2. Regular Admissions Status (If student is provisional admit, student must attain regular status at the completion of first academic year.)
  3. Personal Interview with Communication Faculty
  4. Letter of Recommendation from High School or College Instructor, Counselor, or other appropriate representative (internship or work supervisor, coaches, adult media club director, etc.)
  5. Optional:  Work Samples (News stories (written,video,audio); original writing samples; design and layout samples, photojournalism, audio or video podcasts, etc.)  Bringing in work samples can help increase the size of the grant.

Requirements to renew Newspaper (Talon News Media) scholarships

  1. Must actively participate in TNM activities as team member and attend meetings, contribute to planning, organizing, and production of TNM publications and programs even if not enrolled for credit or work study.
  2. Must sequentially enroll in and successfully complete Introduction to Journalism, Writing for the Media, Talon Practicum 385 (1 hr), and Talon Practicum 485 (3 hours).
  3. Must during first semester join (at Talon’s expense) and remain in good standing with the American Collegiate Press Association and the Missouri Media College Association standards and practices.

Art + Design Scholarship

Art + Design Scholarships

Open to all undergraduate art majors (Art Education, Art Therapy, Graphic Design). Grants are for up to $1000 annually, based on the discretion of the grant advisor. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Full-time student majoring in art
  2. Regular admissions status (if student is provisional admit, student must attain regular status at the completion of first academic year.)
  3. Personal interview with Art + Design faculty
  4. Letter of recommendation from high school or college instructor, counselor, or other appropriate representative (internship or work supervisor, coaches, adult media club director, etc.)
  5. Work hours for the department in art or design related tasks (ex. tech support in Mac lab or help with gallery exhibition) for 8-20 hours a semester, depending on grant amount.

Portfolio Review

Your portfolio should include 12 – 20 pieces of recent work. Drawings and photographs do not have to be matted or framed.  You should select artwork that represents the variety and quality of your capabilities as an artist.  Show your ability to draw from life, rather than from printed photographs.  We will look for evidence of originality, creativity, technical skill, and knowledge and versatility of media and subject, as well as an understanding of color, composition and design.
 
You can submit your portfolio in a number of ways:  bring the actual work to campus for a review, email pdf of digital files, or provide a CD or flash drive.  It’s recommended that you visit and meet with a faculty member of the Art + Design Department.

In order to renew, you must

  1. Enroll in minimum of 15 hours of AR credits each year.
  2. Maintain full-time student status
  3. Maintain a 3.0 in art courses taken at Avila.
  4. Fulfill the work hour requirement.
