The Art, Advertising & Hip Hop course culminates in a full day immersion where the hip-hop community leadership and representatives are invited to the Avila University campus for an event filled with performances, poetry, music, food, art, and entertainment. In addition to the presentation of the student’s final projects, community artists are invited to display elements of hip-hop in an exchange that is both reciprocal and memorable.
Hip-hop has become a lifestyle to many African American, Latino and white young adults. It is no longer viewed as a youthful expression of rage by young people around the world but instead over the past 20 years has become a major and thriving societal force shaping the ideas, behaviors, and attitudes of young adults. The influence of hip-hop can be seen in fashion, electronic design, auto design, movies, music, literary works, fashion, and hundreds of other mediums shaping our modern society. But it also, and probably most importantly, provides the frame for how many grow to understand themselves and how they fit in the world around them. It has become a significant center for culture, politics, and identity as well as a barometer for social engagement. This is the foundation for the course and its activities.
