BA in English Course Requirements

Avila University offers a dynamic English major that encourages students to look deeply into texts while examining them in their relation to their context. The English major offers students a choice between two emphases: Literature, and Writing and Rhetoric. Both emphases build from Major Requirements that provide students with a foundation in academic writing, research, theory, and criticism. The Literature Emphasis presents students with a diverse selection of fictive and literary texts, focusing on students’ ability to interpret these texts within a specific context. The Writing and Rhetoric Emphasis builds composition and interpretive skills in both creative and persuasive writing.

English Minor Course Requirements

Avila University offers a flexible English minor that affords students in fields other than English the opportunity to pursue their interest in writing, critical thinking, and analysis.  Students who take the minor will develop skills that will enhance and broaden their career possibilities.  By providing coursework in composition, creative writing, literary analysis, and rhetoric, the minor encourages students to shape a curriculum that develops their talents and helps them achieve their career goals.

Certificate in Writing and Rhetoric

A certificate in Writing and Rhetoric helps prepare students for careers in any field that requires advanced skills in written or visual rhetoric. Students who earn the certificate will sharpen their professional writing skills and strengthen their ability to communicate clearly and effectively through a variety of media. The certificate requires 12 credit hours. Transfer credit is not allowed for courses which count toward the certificate.
