Master of Science in Psychology
The Master of Science in Psychology from Avila University is a 36-credit degree program that provides students with a solid foundation in psychology. The degree program offers students an in-depth survey of the diverse research, theory, and practices of psychology’s many sub-disciplines. The program is designed for students preparing to apply for doctoral programs and for students interested in working in non-clinical settings.
The MS in Psychology degree program has three tracks: research, mental health and general. The degree programs require a set of core courses that cover foundation components of psychology and statistical research design. The research track utilizes additional coursework with hands-on research to prepare students planning for advanced study in psychology. Both tracks are available to those students who are interested continuing their education in psychology in a non-clinical path.

Master of Science in Psychology Accelerated 4+1 option
The School of Psychology offers an accelerated option to outstanding undergraduate Avila psychology students allowing a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Psychology to be earned in as few as 5 years. Through early admission to the Master of Science in Psychology program, students admitted to the accelerated 4+1 program may earn up to 12 credit hours at the graduate level to be counted toward both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Interested students should submit an application for admission to the School of Psychology. The admission process should be started early to ensure timely consideration. Students may consult with the department chair and the graduate psychology enrollment and retention manager prior to applying.
Accelerated 4+1 Admission Requirements
- Declared major in Psychology at Avila University
- Advanced standing and minimum overall and Avila University 3.25 GPAs
- A minimum of 18 credit hours completed in psychology courses with a minimum 3.5 GPA in the major
- Departmental application
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from current Avila faculty
- Statement of Purpose: Your statement should reflect your motivation for graduate study, your professional goals, as well as how you think your career and academic goals will be supported by the experience of an education at Avila University. The statement should be between 300-500 words.
- Interview – Once all other application materials have been received, the department will coordinate an admission interview.
Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the accelerated option. All completed application files will be considered, though an interview may not be extended to every applicant. A denial decision to the accelerate option does not preclude future admission into the Psychology graduate degree program.
Once admitted, a 3.0 GPA in all graduate and undergraduate coursework must be maintained, with no grades below a “B” at the graduate level. Failure to meet these minimum requirements will result in removal from the accelerated option.
