TESL & ELL

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

This concentration is for those who are interested in teaching English to children and adults either locally or abroad.  Students will gain language theory skills while developing the interpersonal skills necessary to teach in a variety of contexts, from adult education programs to international teaching positions to K-12 classrooms. 

This program does not require previous teaching experience.

Program of Study

Advanced Certification: ELL (21 hours)

    • ED 656 Advanced Literature for Youth (3)

    • ED 650 Language and Culture (3)

    • ED 651 Modern Grammar and Linguistics (3)

    • ED 661 Language Acquisition and Development (3)

    • ED 652 Methods of Teaching Language and Literacy (3)

    • ED 654 Materials, Design, and Assessment for ELL (3)

    • ED 695 ELL Practicum or ED 680 Elective* (3)

Master of Arts in Education: TESL (33 hours)

     Four additional courses are required:

    • ED 657 Teaching Adult Language Learners (3)

    • ED 696 TESL Practicum (3)

    • ED 646 Technology as a Tool for Global Education (3)

    • ED 680 Elective (3)

*Advanced certification requires ED 695. Students not seeking certification may substitute a graduate-level elective. 

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission:

    • a completed online application
    • an undergraduate transcript from an accredited college which indicates:
      • an earned bachelor’s degree
      • a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or above 
    • Students whose primary language is not English are required to submit official score reports of the TOEFL exam.  Minimum required scores is 550 on the written test, 237 on the computer based test, or 92 on the Internet-based test.  The IELTS exam scores may be submitted in lieu of the TOEFL.  The minimum IELTS exam score required is an overall score of 6.5 with no individual band score below 5.5

Avila's School of Education Awarded a Fulbright Hays Grant

The School of Education has been awarded a Fulbright Hays grant for a project titled From Genocide to Regeneration:  An Exploration of Rwandan Social Justice Issues through the Lens of Education.   The project will provide an opportunity to take K-12 educators to Rwanda for an intensive 4-week study to promote the integration of African studies into the K-12 curriculum, increase the cultural competency of American educators & students, and provide an in-depth study of the culture & history of Rwanda through the lens of education & social justice issues.  An informational session will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Barefoot Conference Room, Marion Center.
