This concentration focuses on instruction and learning about classroom practices, the development of classroom materials, and ways in which teaching occurs in classrooms. Students interested in this concentration will learn about theory, research, and practice as they relate to best curricular and instructional practices. 

Program of Study

•ED 689 Research Methods in ED (3)

•ED 617 Theories of Behavior (3)

•ED 615 Theories of Learning (3)

•ED 630 Advanced Curriculum and Instruction (3)

•ED 684 Effective Instruction (3)

•ED 600-level Elective or ED 680 Special Topics courses (3)

•15 hours of additional graduate electives*

*Students may apply up to 9 hours of graduate credit to meet additional elective hours.

*Students who have completed Avila’s Graduate Initial Teacher Certification program are awarded 15 of those hours towards the additional elective hours.

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission:

    • Complete an online application 
    • Provide an undergraduate transcript from an accredited college which indicates:
      • An earned bachelor’s degree
      • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or above 
    • Students whose primary language is not English are required to submit official score reports of the TOEFL exam.  The minimum required score is 550 on the written test, 237 on the computer based test, or 92 on the Internet-based test. The IELTS exam scores may be submitted in lieu of the TOEFL. The minimum IELTS exam score required is an overall score of 6.5 with no individual band score below 5.5.

Avila's School of Education Awarded a Fulbright Hays Grant

The School of Education has been awarded a Fulbright Hays grant for a project titled From Genocide to Regeneration:  An Exploration of Rwandan Social Justice Issues through the Lens of Education.   The project will provide an opportunity to take K-12 educators to Rwanda for an intensive 4-week study to promote the integration of African studies into the K-12 curriculum, increase the cultural competency of American educators & students, and provide an in-depth study of the culture & history of Rwanda through the lens of education & social justice issues.  An informational session will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Barefoot Conference Room, Marion Center.
