Graduate School of Education

Our Graduate Education programs provide quality education from nearly a century of tradition. Students who earned a master’s degree or graduate teacher certification at Avila are now serving with distinction in local, national and global schools, agencies and communities. Students receive personal attention from experienced faculty and advisors in a supportive, adult environment. Courses are structured in five- and eight-week sessions, with weekend, evening, and online options, letting you schedule the classes you need to complete your degree at your own pace.

Our program is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MoDESE).

The School of Education offers the following graduate programs:        

Master of Arts in Education

Concentrations in the following areas:

Teaching and Learning

This concentration focuses on instruction and learning about classroom practices, the development of classroom materials, and ways in which teaching occurs in classrooms. Students interested in this concentration will learn about theory, research, and practice as they relate to best curricular and instructional practices. Course options available on-campus and online.

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

This concentration is for those who are interested in teaching English to children and adults either locally or abroad.  Students will gain language theory skills while developing the interpersonal skills necessary to teach in a variety of contexts, from adult education programs to international teaching positions to K-12 classrooms.  This program does not require previous teaching experience. 

Literacy

This concentration is designed to prepare teachers to focus on literacy development, instruction, and assessment of students with diverse learning and literacy needs. The course requirements for an Advanced Certificate in Special Reading are included within the Master’s coursework.

Graduate Initial Teaching Certification

Elementary Education

An intensive 33-36 month program for students pursuing teacher certification in Elementary classrooms which prepares students to teach all subjects in grades 1-6. 

Middle School

An intensive 21-24 month program that prepares students for teacher certification in Middle School (grades 5-9) classrooms.  Students choose from a content area of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies

Secondary

An intensive 21-24 month program that prepares students for teacher certification in Secondary (grades 9-12) classrooms.  Students choose from a content area of Biology, Business, ChemistryEnglish, Social Studies, Speech/Theatre

Special Education

Students who choose certification in Special Education complete the full elementary program as well as the coursework and experiences required to add the K-12 Cross Categorical endorsement.

Art (K-12)

An intensive 21-24 month program that prepares students for teacher certification in Art (K-12) classrooms.

Physical Education (K-12)

An intensive 33-36 month program that prepares students for teacher certification in Physical Education (K-12) classrooms & settings.  

Advanced Teaching Certification

English Language Learners (ELL)

An accelerated four-semester program for Certified K-12 teachers who wish to add an Advanced Certification in ELL.  Teachers can work toward the Advanced Certification, or with a few additional classes complete a Master’s Degree in TESL.

Special Reading

An accelerated program for Certified K-12 teachers who wish to add an Advanced Certification in Special Reading.  This program allows teachers to become Title I teachers, literacy coaches, and other district-level positions, and will also assist teachers to become more effective teachers of reading in the regular classroom.

Avila's School of Education Awarded a Fulbright Hays Grant

The School of Education has been awarded a Fulbright Hays grant for a project titled From Genocide to Regeneration:  An Exploration of Rwandan Social Justice Issues through the Lens of Education.   The project will provide an opportunity to take K-12 educators to Rwanda for an intensive 4-week study to promote the integration of African studies into the K-12 curriculum, increase the cultural competency of American educators & students, and provide an in-depth study of the culture & history of Rwanda through the lens of education & social justice issues.  An informational session will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Barefoot Conference Room, Marion Center.
