Department of Art + Design

Art + Design at Avila

The Department of Art + Design is grounded in a philosophy of turning artistic talent into career success. The foundational art curriculum (taken by all art majors) helps students develop the visual, conceptual and technical skills essential for success in a professional art career. Our goal is for students to affect positive change on the world around them through work as arts educators, therapists, and visual communicators.

Exceptional classroom engagement is a hallmark of an Avila education. All Art + Design faculty are creative professionals with experience as educators, designers, and studio artists. A low faculty-to-student ratio (average class size of 12) means that students receive individualized instruction and have a one-on-one relationship with the faculty.

Undergraduate Majors

Bachelor of Arts: Art Therapy
Art therapy is a human service profession that uses art media, the creative art process, and patient/client responses as reflections of an individual’s development, abilities, personality, interests, concerns, and conflicts. Art therapists in individual, couples, family, and group therapy formats serve populations of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds.

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Graphic Design
To be a graphic designer, you’ll develop these strengths: your own visual style, conceptualizing skills, client-oriented problem solving, and technical skills such as software and printing technology. Avila’s graphic design major prepares you for professional practice, with hands-on experience.
