2019 Public Reading Celebrates Life of Toni Morrison

The Avila University Department of English and Foreign Languages honored Toni Morrison during its annual Public Reading on September 19 on the campus quad.

Students, faculty and staff read from two of Morrison’s novels, Sula and The Bluest Eye, in addition to a number of selections from the Nobel Prize recipient. The choice of readings was simple, according to Amy Milakovic, Ph.D., associate professor of English, department chair and organizer for the event.

“Morrison’s stories depict the harsh reality of our struggle between good and evil and the high price paid for systemic oppression,” Milakovic said. “Her way forward—the power of community, the redemption in love—finds its reflection in Avila’s service to the dear neighbor and its commitment to social justice and right relationships.”

This year’s public reading was the ninth iteration of the event, which takes place in the fall semester. Previous public readings have centered on dystopic writings, discrimination, racism and other topics.
