Members of the Talon Media Network (TMN) brought home six awards from the Missouri Collegiate Media Association (MCMA) 2014 Annual Conference, held last weekend in Kirksville, Mo.
The Talon's six awards were won across all spectrums in journalism – writing, photography, advertising, illustration, and publication design. The Avila Talon competed in Division 3 of the competition, which includes William Jewell, Southwest Baptist, Park University, Culver-Stockton College, Evangel University, and Missouri Valley College. The TMN won 1st and 3rd place in Story + Illustration; 1st & 2nd Place in Info Graphics; 2nd Place in Feature Photography; and 2nd Place in Regular Columns.
According to Dr. J. Anthony Snorgrass, the Talon's faculty advisor, the significance of this year's awards is that it represents the full spectrum of the team's work, particularly in the diversity of the categories in which it won. "This year's awards are extra special because the team focused on transitioning from typical newspaper style and overage to more of a digest magazine, feature- oriented publication and the Talon's new look especially stood among the competition." Snorgrass said. Special accolades go to Aimee Adams the editor in chief, and the entire team for the many extra hours they have devoted to assuring the Talon and Avila University remain a recognized model of progressive digital media publications.
Aimee Adams, says she is quite proud of what she and her team have been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. "Total shifts in content and design are never easy and often take a few years to transition to a new culture", she says.
