Avila University senior graphic design students Roberto Camacho and Jonathan Mahoney had a stellar night at the 2010 Kansas City ADDY Awards on February 19, 2011. The pair was awarded a combined total of two Gold ADDY awards, one Silver ADDY and the Best of Student Show Award.
"The ADDY Awards is the world's largest advertising competition with over 50,000 entries annually… representing the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising from media of all types, creative by all sizes and entrants of all levels from anywhere in the world.
The Kansas City ADDY Awards has historically been one of the largest — if not the largest — local ADDY award shows in the country… recognizing and celebrating the creative excellence of Kansas City's diverse and richly talented advertising and marketing community."
Camacho earned Avila's first award of the night with a Gold ADDY for his "Pioneers of Architecture" book design series. He also received a Silver ADDY for his "St. Louis Zoo Identity Redesign" mixed media campaign. Mahoney was awarded a Gold ADDY for his "Kansas City Home & Garden Identity Redesign" mixed media campaign. Additionally, the KCH&G campaign garnered Mahoney top student honors with the award for Best of Student Show. Camacho and Mahoney's gold-awarded entries will go on to compete at the regional level.
Camacho and Mahoney were equally surprised and honored by the recognition of their design work. "Winning was validation that Roberto and I are on the right track toward our careers in design," said Mahoney when asked what the awards meant to him. Camacho also recognized the ADDY's impact stating, "I feel proud to bring such an award to our school and am just very excited for the future of my design career."
Both students will graduate in May from Avila's Art + Design Department with Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Graphic Design.
