Beginning in Fall 2012 Communication majors who want to pursue a career in sports media may now elect to earn a concentration in sports communication. Created to meet the expanding need for sports marketing, promotion, advertising, broadcasting, and creation of video content for a wide variety of applications in social and other electronic media being requested by corporate and non-profit organizations, the Communication Department received approval to offer the new concentration.
The Department has a history of success in the sports communication field already. Alumni have found success in the sports media field: Zach Choate is a sports anchor with KTTC –TV in Minnesota; Emily Hoskins is the Director of Promotions for the TBones baseball team in Kansas City, KS; Max Thompson writes for ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine; Ben Digman produces "The Post Game" for Yahoo Sports; and several alums work for Time Warner Sports. Current students have worked on projects with sports organizations such as, the National Sports Center for the Disabled; the Negro League Baseball Museum; the Mavericks Hockey Team, the Wizards Soccer Team (before they became Sporting KC), and the Will Shields Foundation, as well as several private fitness clubs.
New courses will be added to increase the opportunity for students to have sports media projects for their senior portfolios. Having a specific designation of sports communication in their degree program will also strengthen the student's resume to target jobs in the sports industry.
