Each
summer Upward Bound students are required to participate in a six
week summer program.
This summer component is designed to simulate a college atmosphere.
Program participants get an opportunity to reside on campus at Avila
University and experience a college atmosphere.
At the Summer Excellence Institute (SEI), students receive instructions
in their core classes. Students also attend enrichment classes that
are designed to help them develop and enhance a variety of skills
such as study skills, goal setting, time management, and public
speaking. During the sixth and final week of the summer program,
students go on a reward trip. Students are selected for the trip
based on their overall performance during the summer. (For more
details, refer to the student
handbook.) Participants tour the sites of the destination city
and various colleges along the way. Past destinations have included
New Orleans, Dallas, Chicago, Washington D.C., Dallas, Atlanta,
Saint Louis, Memphis, Birmingham, New Mexico, and Denver.
