The Upward Bound program academic year component consists of weekly tutoring at the target schools and a monthly study session at Avila University. The weekly tutoring component is designed to help students with their school work in core subject areas and foster good study habits

Weekly tutoring sessions are held at Grandview and Ruskin High schools on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Tutoring sessions are also held at Avila University campus on Wednesday. The sessions on Wednesday are by appointment. Students are required to make appointments for Wednesday tutoring sessions. Appointments must be made a week in advance. All weekly tutoring sessions are held from 2.30 to 4:00 pm. (For more details, refer to the student handbook.)

Saturday study sessions are held once a month. They are designed to provide an opportunity for participants to get extra help with their work. They also provide an opportunity for non target participants and those students who are excused from weekly tutoring sessions to get assistance with their course work. Students who have any grade below a C or a GPA that is below 2.25 are required to attend Saturday study sessions in addition to their weekly tutoring. Cultural and educational activities are held in conjunction with Saturday study sessions. These activities are designed for experiential learning and to help the student develop into a well-rounded individual. All students are required to participate in educational activities. Cultural and educational activities are normally held from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Transportation is not provided for students to and from Avila University. Parents and guardians are required to pick up their students not later than 4:00 pm from Avila University.
