Academic Year Component

The Upward Bound program academic year component consists of weekly tutoring at the target schools and one Saturday Study Sessions a month at Avila University. The weekly tutoring component is designed to help students with their school work in core subject areas and foster good study habits

Weekly tutoring sessions are held at Grandview and Ruskin High schools on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Tutoring sessions are also held at Avila University campus on Wednesday. The sessions on Wednesday are by appointment. Students are required to make appointments for Wednesday tutoring sessions. Appointments must be made a week in advance. All weekly tutoring sessions are held from 2.35 PM to 4:05 PM (Grandview) or 2:40 PM to 4:10 PM (Ruskin). (For more details, refer to the student handbook.)

Saturday study sessions are held twice a month. They are designed to provide an opportunity for participants to strenthen their academic skills with workshops in ACT prep, math, scholarship writing, college admission and others.

Cultural and educational activities are held throughout the year. These activities are designed for experiential learning and to help the student develop into a well-rounded individual. All students are required to participate in one activity a month. Transportation is not provided for students to and from Avila University.
