SUMMER DRAMA CAMP AT GOPPERT THEATRE
On the campus of Avila University
For grades 7 through graduating seniors
July 7 through 26, 2008
This three-week intensive program in Goppert Theatre includes classes in acting, musical theatre, and all aspects of technical theatre, culminating in 4 public performances of a musical play based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland and a non-musical play based on his Alice Through the Looking Glass. Professional actors from the Theatre for Young America education department and faculty members of the Avila University Theatre Department teach the classes and supervise the full-scale production on the stage of Goppert Theatre.
Students will have workshops in all aspects of theatrical production in the mornings and then will experience exciting and intensive rehearsals in the afternoon. The fully staged production will include all the colorful costumes and evocative settings integral to Lewis Carroll’s vivid fantasies. The musical production includes original songs and music and many opportunities for solo and choral performance.
Technical Theatre. Students will have opportunities to learn about designing sets, costumes and lighting and will experience direct hands-on activities in construction of sets, props, costumes and implementing a lighting design.
Acting Classes. These classes incorporate work on the student’s voice, body, and imagination by means of a variety of exercises and drama games. Acting classes help students increase their ability to communicate verbally and physically, to think imaginatively, to concentrate, to feel and understand emotions, to co-operate in groups, and to seek solutions. In its long history of drama training, Theatre for Young America is proud to have nurtured both students that pursue professional careers in theatre and students that utilize their theatrical skills for success in many other fields. Acting classes follow the model curriculum set out by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, including work on improvisation, scene study, problem solving in groups, monologues, dramatic structure, audition techniques, and basic stage terminology.
