KANSAS CITY, Mo - - Members of the Talon Media Network (TMN) brought home 12 awards from the Missouri Collegiate Media Association (MCMA) 2012 Annual Conference, held April 14 in St. Joseph, Mo.
That doubled the number of awards TMN garnered the year before when it won an impressive six at the 2011 MCMA conference. The Talon’s unprecedented 12 awards were won across all spectrums in journalism – writing, advertising, illustration and design. The Avila contingent competed in Division 3 of the competition.
TMN won first- and third-place awards for its “HOPE” and “Avila Inspirations” editions of the Talon, Avila’s student newspaper. It also earned first place for “In-Depth Reporting” for its Facebook issue. The Talon advertising group won third place for its “The Communicators” promotional ad series designed by Valerie Reed and Chuque McDonald.
According to J. Anthony Snorgrass, Ph.D., the Talon’s faculty advisor, the significance of this year’s awards is that it represents the full spectrum of the team’s work, particularly in the diversity of the categories in which it won. The Talon’s sports coverage especially stood out as 50 percent of the awards were for sports-related stories.
“The year’s awards are extra special because we transitioned to a relatively new leadership team,” Snorgrass said. “Special accolades go to Emilee Bickleman, the former editor in chief, and the entire team for the many extra hours they have devoted to assuring the Talon and Avila University remain a recognized model of progressive new media publications.
“Overall, this year showcased a strong field with many quality entries, so the Talon’s performance against other schools with journalism programs is quite impressive.”
