KANSAS CITY, Mo - Ann O’Meara, who has worked at high levels in marketing and communications for the past two decades, has joined Avila University as its assistant vice president of marketing and communications, the university announced today.
As the AVP for marketing and communications, O’Meara will lead the University Office of Marketing and Communications and is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating a strategic and integrated marketing, communications and public awareness plan to meet the University’s goals by reaching all internal and external target audiences. She also will serve on the University’s Executive Committee.
“Ann brings a proven record of success in marketing at the collegiate level,” said Avila President Ron Slepitza, Ph.D., CSJA. “With her demonstrated ability to organize and lead teams, I have no doubt she will lead Avila’s marketing efforts to new heights, further enhancing the reputation and visibility of the University in the community and beyond.”
O’Meara brings a wealth of experience in marketing to her new role at Avila. Most prominently, she was director of marketing at Sam Houston State University, a university of more than 17,000 students in Huntsville, Texas, from 2008-10, where she oversaw a strategic plan that resulted in an 11 percent increase in applications, six percent increase in enrollment and 32 percent increase in development. She led a redesign of the SHSU Web site, which won a 2010 National Education Merit Award and established a successful social media strategy.
O’Meara has previous and more recent ties to the Kansas City area. She was director of marketing at the Kansas City Business Journal from 1992-95 and was marketing vice president at Yachtsman Ventures in Overland Park, Kan. from 1996-2008. After leaving Sam Houston State in 2010, she performed contract work for the Texas Renaissance Festival and Doncaster, an online fashion company.

O’Meara graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor of science in business and public administration and earned a master’s of business administration with an emphasis in marketing in 2007 from the University of Phoenix – Houston.
