KANSAS CITY, Mo - -The Talon Media Network dominated the Design category at the 2011 Missouri Collegiate Media Association Awards for Division 3 schools for the second straight year.
The TMN won first- and third-place awards for its "Earth Day" and "Student Voices" editions of the Talon, Avila's student newspaper, respectively. It also earned honorable mention for the paper's "Rubik's Cube" issue.
In feature writing, Talor Carr earned honorable mention for her story, "Beyond the Bus Stop." The Talon Advertising Group won third place for its "Orange T-Shirts" promotional ad series designed by Valerie Reed for the National Sports Center for the Disabled.
According to J. Anthony Snorgrass, the Talon's faculty advisor, the significance of this year's awards is that it represents the full spectrum of the Talon team's work and showcases the teamwork required to maintain a quality publication.
"The year's awards are extra special because we have a relatively new team of students who have just recently taken the leadership helm," Snorgrass said. "Special accolades are given to Nicole Drew, Valerie Reed and Talor Carr and the entire team for the many hours they have devoted to assuring that the Talon and Avila University remain a recognized model of progressive new media publications."
