KANSAS CITY, Mo - - Avila University English professor Stanley E. Banks is scheduled to be interviewed next week on "KC Currents," a radio talk program broadcast on KCUR, 89.3 FM. The broadcast is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, and Banks said he'll be talking about his poetry – he's had four books of his own poems published and edited a recent book of poetry written by his wife – and his experiences as a young child helping his grandmother bootleg beer and food. Back then, Banks' grandmother was acquaintances with jazz legends Charlie Parker and Count Basie and even slightly knew President Harry Truman.
Banks, who has spent years traveling the state of Missouri talking about and reading poetry to schoolchildren, is in the running to be named Poet Laureate of Missouri by Governor Jay Nixon in January. He has been an assistant professor in Avila's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences for 14 years.
