  Avila’s Talon wins big again in statewide awards

The Talon Media Network, Avila University’s student news organization, dominated the Special Report category at the 2010 Missouri College Media Association Awards, held April 27 in Kansas City.

TMN won first- and third-place awards for Division 3 schools for two special editions during the 2009-10 school year. The Talon received a Best in Class award for its “Texting While Driving” edition and third place for its “Swine Flu” edition. The Talon also took third place for its Personal Experiences feature pages and another third for a feature story on James Stewart written by Shawn Sullivan.

The Talon Advertising Group also won third place for its “McDonald’s Under the Tree Post-it Note” promotion and an honorable mention for the “Keep the Flu Away from AU” campaign.

“The significance of this year’s awards are that they represent the full breadth of the Talon team’s work and also showcase the teamwork required to maintain a quality publication,” said J. Anthony Snorgrass, the Talon’s faculty advisor.

Snorgrass extended special accolades to Nicole Drew, David Fuller, Shawna Downing, Valerie Reed, Emilee Bilyeu and the entire team for the many hours they have devoted to assuring that the Talon and Avila remain a model of progressive new millennium publications.

Snorgrass also dispensed kudos to the following Talon staffers: Shawnna Downing and Brian Garrison with Talon Online & uReport; Javier Kelty, Jermaine Thomas, Trisha Simmons, Ben Kopp and Charlotte Bishop with; videographer/podcast staffers Mike Rollen and Jacqueline Sharp; ad rep Trisha Simmons; writers/reporters/correspondents Jennifer Gipe, Anna Scott, Brian Garrison, Peter Kondracki, Jessica Morrow, Colleen Reagan, Conor Riley, Shawn Sullivan, Chung Cheng and Timothy Matson; and I-Journalism SPR 10 students Emilee Bickleman, Brandon Dunlap, Bransen Ireland, Rachel Kloser, Teresa Kuppinger, Elyssa Noordam and Thomas Swager.
