Avila junior makes history by qualifying for NAIA national meet

  Kansas City, MO
November 9, 2010

Adam McGovernAvila University junior Adam McGovern made history last weekend by becoming the school’s first runner to ever qualify for the NAIA National Cross Country Championships.

McGovern, a transfer from Emporia State who ran for Eagles cross country coach Dave Denny at Lee’s Summit West High School, qualified for nationals by finishing in third place at the Heart of America Athletic Conference meet Nov. 6 in Baldwin City, Kan. McGovern completed the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 54.39 seconds, placing behind only two runners from Graceland, which won the conference team title. That made McGovern the highest-placing individual not on the winning team.

NAIA nat ChampThe top team and top five individuals not on that team qualified for the NAIA National meet, scheduled for Nov. 20 in Vancouver, Wash.

This is the first season Avila has fielded men’s and women’s cross country teams. McGovern’s lone teammate on the Eagles men’s team, Cary Lanzoni, also competed in the conference meet, and three women, Eden Woodbury, Megan Eagleburger and Ashley Sheets, ran in the 5-kilometer women’s race.

Let’s all cheer Adam on and wish him well as he represents the Eagles at nationals!
