The Student Affairs Committee supports, sponsors, and initiates the REACH, MOSINA, MLN, and other awards for formal recognition of outstanding student achievement. Each award and scholarship has criteria and timeliness specific to the individual program.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Tradition of Excellence
One junior student is selected annually by the nursing faculty following admission to the nursing program. The selected student demonstrates through the application interview and written essay a commitment and potential for excellence in nursing.
Missouri League for Nursing
(MLN)
Each year Avila nursing students are eligible for several scholarships
distributed by MLN in December. Criteria for selection is based
on academic achievement, Missouri residency and financial need.
The
Research Foundation provides scholarships for students
interested in pursuing a degree in nursing at one of the following
nursing programs: Avila University (Kansas City, MO), Rockhurst
University/Research College of Nursing (Kansas City, MO) or William
Jewell College (Liberty, MO).
Nancy
Whalen Nursing Scholarship is awarded annually to help
Children's Mercy employees in nursing programs leading to an LPN
or RN degree.
AWARDS
MLN Outstanding Graduating Student Nurse Award
This award allows individual schools to acknowledge, through MLN, a graduating student who exhibits leadership potential, strong interpersonal skills and an interest in continuing professional growth.
REACH Award
One junior and one senior student are selected annually by his/her peers to receive the REACH Award. The selected students are recognized for their Responsibility; Enthusiasm; Participation in school, Professional and family Activities; Concern for colleagues; and their willingness to offer Help when needed.
MOSINA
Awards (Most Outstanding Senior in Nursing Award)
This award supports the faculty belief that the humanities are an
essential part of the nursing program and as such recognizes the
senior nursing student who has best achieved the curriculum objective
as determined through academic excellence, service, and clinical
performance.
SIGMA THETA TAU,
INTERNATIONAL endeavors to seek out and reward all students
in baccalaureate or higher degree nursing programs who have demonstrated
ability in nursing as evidenced by superior academic achievement.
Chapters, which are the mechanisms for inducting eligible candidates,
take an imperative position to seek and recognize all qualified
candidates. Avila was the first liberal arts college to be granted
the opportunity to establish a chapter. Each year, senior nursing
students are nominated for membership. Purposes of the organization
are to:
- Recognize superior achievement and scholarship.
- Recognize the development of leadership qualities.
- Foster high professional standards.
- Encourage creative work.
- Strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession.
