Nothing makes you appreciate what you have and not take things for granted than meeting and getting to know people who have little in the way of material possessions. This happened to me as I got to know and love the children and families of Okolona, Miss.
We drive nice cars that have stereo radios and CD players. We have iPods, video games and other toys to play with. The families there had little or none of that. Many had houses that weren't even safe to live in. Many homes had leaky roofs, broken windows, or no heat.
But one thing these children had was their families. Over the three years I worked with them, they showed me it's not about the material things you have. All these kids really need are their families. They don't complain about misfortunes, or wants and needs. They're thankful for their families and the love that resides within.
These children have taught me a great many lessons. I have let go of my greed, and I take little for granted. My family and friends are closer to me than ever. For that, I love these people and love helping them and learning from them.
