Mary Hynes , Associate Professor and Chair of Religious Studies
Dr. Mary Hynes began her teaching career as
a teaching assistant and adjunct faculty member
at St. Louis University. Her first full-time faculty
assignment was at the State University of Florida in
Miami (FIU). She came to Avila in 1992. She is an
Associate Professor and the Chair of the Religious
Studies Department. She also serves as the Religious
Studies Chair for the Avila Advantage program.
Dr. Hynes has three degrees in Theology and has
studied Religious Studies around the world. She has
studied and/or taught in England, Peru, Honduras,
Guatemala, El Salvador, Israel, Egypt, Ireland, Italy,
Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Hynes is an expert
on Religion and Politics, in particular politics in
Latin America. She has also focused on Comparative
Religions, Critical Analysis in the Study of Religion
and the History of Catholicism. She has taught
Women’s Studies for 15 years.
Dr. Hynes is the author of the book: Surrender; Your
Path to Peace. She is the author of two audio tape
lecture series. The first is entitled, “Surrender”
and the second is titled, “Forgiveness”. She has
also authored a number of articles for Theological
journals. Dr. Hynes has delivered papers and given
conferences across the United States most recently in
Connecticut, Ohio and Western Kansas.
