VIOLENCE PREVENTION COORDINATOR, UMKC WOMEN'S CENTER



POSITION OVERVIEW

The Violence Prevention Coordinator works with the Project Director of the UMKC Violence Prevention and Response Project, community consultants, staff from the Women's Center and other UMKC campus offices to provide coordination of the Violence Prevention and Response Project at UMKC, including programming, education, and support services for sexual violence survivors, their families, and the UMKC community. The Project and position are funded by a three-year grant through the U.S.
Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (VAWA Grant). The main purposes of the grant are to increase awareness of sexual violence and provide services to survivors of sexual violence, their families, partners, and friends; provide education about the problem of sexual violence, and increase the number of reports and on- and off-campus adjudications of sexual violence. The Violence Prevention Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of the Women's Center.



Responsibilities Include:

* Design and implement violence prevention and awareness
programming including events such as the V-Day College Campaign, Take Back the Night, and Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Months) for women and men students, faculty, staff and community members;
* Design and implement educational training about sexual violence
for campus administrators and campus security personnel, as well as faculty and staff members;
* Work closely with the Victim Services Adjudication Advisor to
ensure the inclusion and delivery of information related to the judicial processes in those trainings;
* Work with Human Resources to ensure training of new staff during
New Employee Orientation; Design and implement educational training about sexual violence that addresses the needs of professional students in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Law, and Education;
* Serve as a resource and provide consultation to the university
community regarding issues of sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and other forms of sexual violence;
* Work with the Victim Services Adjudication Advisor and the
Violence Prevention and Response Task Force to review and revise current violence response policy and protocol at UMKC;
* Supervise the design of grant-related publications, including
awareness raising pieces and program brochures;
* Provide program assessment as needed;
* Aid the project director in creating quarterly grant management
reports, maintaining the grant budget, and other grant management activities as needed;
* Represent the Violence Prevention and Response Project and/or
Women's Center on University and community committees as assigned;
* Other duties as assigned;
* Evening and weekend hours, and some travel may be required.



Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Women's Studies, or related
field is required;
* One to two years directly related experience is needed; an
advanced degree may be used as a substitute for the work experience;
* Experience in program planning in a not-for-profit organization
and/or University environment;
* Strong public speaking skills as well as solid writing, analytic
and organization skills;
* Demonstrated commitment to activism and women's issues and
ability to meet the needs of a diverse population.



Preferred Qualifications:

* Master's degree in College Personnel/Student Affairs, Social
Work, Counseling, Women's Studies, or related field preferred;
* Advocacy experience in domestic violence or sexual assault
preferred.

MOCSA, the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, exists to lessen the ill effects of sexual assault and abuse through prevention, education, intervention, treatment and advocacy. The damage done by sexual violence can last a lifetime. Through our programs, MOCSA hopes to prevent these crimes from happening and help victims become survivors.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title :               Education and Outreach Specialist- SVPE Coordinator

Basic Purpose :      To provide bi-lingual Spanish/English education and prevention programs to the community; perform outreach activities to inform community of MOCSA services and to increase awareness and knowledge of issues pertaining to sexual assault and sexual abuse and its prevention; serve as staff coordinator for the Sexual Violence Prevention Education initiative in Wyandotte County; staff the 24-Hour Crisis Line; promote collaboration with and among the community, police and prosecutors.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  1. Provide sexual assault and sexual abuse education and prevention programs to community groups and children and youth of all ages, including those considered high-risk.
  2. Serve as staff coordinator and assist with program development for the Sexual Violence Prevention Education initiative- including coordinating, scheduling and implementing programming, organizing agendas, corresponding with key community partners and writing grant reports.
  3. Perform outreach activities and volunteer recruitment through contact with police departments, schools, businesses, community agencies and other groups.  Outreach will include, but not be limited to, speaking to groups, personal contacts, attendance at community meetings, phone solicitation, staffing displays and materials distribution.
  4. Develop and coordinate data collection and evaluation procedures for grant-related activities, as assigned.
  5. Serve as staff coordinator for MOCSA's Wyandotte County Advisory Committee.
  6. Serve as agency representative to community groups, as assigned.
  7. Serve as member of advocacy team: Provide crisis intervention, support and referrals to callers to the 24-Hour Crisis Line, provide services in Spanish as needed.
  8. Provide hospital, police and court advocacy to adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault and/or rape, as needed.
  9. Perform after-hours staff on-call duties for the 24-Hour Crisis Line as needed.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Organizational Relationships :  This position reports to the Coordinator of Education and Outreach Services. This position also receives project related functional leadership from the Director of Community Services and relates to the Coordinator of Advocacy and Outreach Services and the Volunteer Coordinator. 

Job Specifications : Bachelor's degree in human service field. Ability to effectively communicate in both English and Spanish. Experience working with at-risk youth extremely helpful. The person serving in this position must have excellent communication, organizational and networking skills, public speaking ability, and a strong interest in helping others.  Must also be able to work evening hours, be on-call during the hours of 5:00pm-8:30 am and have a car at their disposal.
