Admission Requirements  
 

Admission to the Graduate Psychology Programs at Avila University is competitive and students are selected on the basis of their preparation and ability. If offered admission, that offer is specific to the term stated in the admission letter. If you do not register for classes or complete your first semester, you may be required to apply again in a subsequent semester.

Minimal Graduate Psychology Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;
  • Prerequisite undergraduate training in psychology:
    • A major or minor degree in Psychology, or
    • Completed undergraduate coursework in General, Developmental, Social, and Abnormal Psychology or
    • If a student does not meet the above prerequisite requirements they must complete a graduate level course in Advanced General Psychology prior to or concurrent with beginning graduate classes.
  • Two strong letters of recommendation.

Additional Admission Requirements for Art Therapy

  • Prerequisite undergraduate training in psychology:
    • A major or minor degree in Psychology, or
    • Completed undergraduate coursework in General, Developmental, Social, and Abnormal Psychology
  • Prerequisite undergraduate or graduate three credit class in statisics. If you have not taken statistics, the graduate level class would be more applicable.
  • Prerequisite undergraduate training in art (for counseling and Art Therapy applicants only).
    • A Bachelors in Fine Arts or
    • 18 semester hours of studio art
  • A portfolio of original artwork on disc, including 10-12 images, and demonstrating competence with art materials and understanding of the expressive potential of art.

Along with these minimal requirements, admission decisions are based on a number of factors, including academic degrees and record, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and relevant work experience. Please check specific programs for additional eligibility and admission requirements.

Transfer Credits
Transfer credit will be reviewed on an individual basis. To count toward graduate requirements, the credit must be clearly graduate level and a grade of 3.0 or better must have been received. Applicants may transfer a maximum of 15 and 9 credit hours respectively for the Counseling Psychology and General Psychology programs.

Please note: a) transfer credit must be approved during a student's first semester of study; b) courses taken at another university after a student has begun graduate work at Avila must be pre-approved by the Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
