What do I need to apply to the Graduate Certification program?
You need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, an overall GPA of 2.75, a completed application and official transcripts. Attendance at an information session is required for admission. You will receive an application at the information session or you can apply online.
What do I need to bring to the Information Session?
You may bring copies of your transcripts to help determine which courses you still need for certification. Please be aware that an official evaluation of your transcripts will not be done by Avila personnel during the meeting.
How long will it take me to get my certification?
It depends on what you want to be certified in and what degree you hold. We will evaluate your official transcripts to determine exactly how many hours you need. Plan on at least a year and a half to finish the program.
Will I have a master’s degree when I’m finished with my certification?
Because our certification courses are offered at the graduate level, you will be half way toward a master’s degree when you earn your certificate. You may stop there or continue on into our Master’s Program to earn your Master of Arts in Education. This requires an additional 18 hours of coursework.
Do you have evening classes?
All of the education courses required for Middle School and Secondary certification are in the late afternoon or evening. Most meet once a week for either 5 weeks or 7 weeks. Elementary and Special Education certifications require some day classes.
Do I have to student teach?
Yes. You are required to do a 12-week final clinical experience to receive your teaching certificate.
What if I’m teaching already?
If you are currently a regular classroom teacher (not a substitute) and are teaching the subject and grade level you plan to be certified in, you may stay in your job and do an internship instead.
How do I student teach if I’m working?
You will not be able to work while you are completing your final clinical experience. You will need to plan on other financial arrangements during that time.
