Secondary Social Studies Education Requirements

 

Teacher candidates major in History and minor in Secondary Education.

AVILA CORE REQUIREMENTS (Beginning Fall 2015)
Foundation Courses (10-12 Hours)  
Communication 3 hrs
Composition I-Rhetorical Discourse 3 hrs
Mathematics -- College Algebra 3 hrs
First year Seminar 1 hr

Pillar Levels (30 hours -- see catalog for specific courses)

  • 24 credit hours at the Acquire and Transform levels (combined), with at least one course from each pillar
  • Minimum of 6 credit hours at the Contribute level (can be met by core and in one pillar)
 
Global Studies (G) Designated Courses 9 hrs
Interdisciplinary (I) Designated Courses 9 hrs
Community Engagement (E) Designated Courses 3 hrs

**Most of the state certification requirements are met through the History degree.

All students must take and pass the MoGEA and the appropriate Missouri Pearson Content Exam.
