Envelope must be clearly marked with YOUR NAME, and THE SEMESTER and YEAR FOR YOUR FINAL CLINICAL EXPERIENCE.
What forms do I need to apply?
Instructions are outlined here.
Can I submit my paperwork as I complete each step?
ALL PAPERWORK NEEDS TO BE SUBMITTED AT ONE TIME. Partial submissions will not be accepted. This also includes the completion of your TB tests.
How does early submit of application affect my placement request?
You increase your chances of being placed with the cooperating teacher, school or district that you have requested.
How can I guarantee a quick placement?
Early submission of application and materials and be extremely flexible in placement request (you may ask for a specific cooperating teacher, but would you like to be in THAT school, even if the cooperating teacher is unavailable to mentor you? If that school isn't available, are you open to other schools within the same district at a specific or any grade level, any teacher?)
Do I get a say in it if my first two choices are not accepted?
We move on to other districts who are accepting teacher candidates. If you want a say, list districts you would be open to.
Am I required to have a doctor's examination prior to my final clinical experience?
Physical medical examinations are not required by Avila. The district you co-teach in MAY require a physical. However, if you receive your TB skin test at Avila Health Services, you will be required to complete the Health Information Form.
When should I get my TB test?
Contact Carol Frevert, R.N., campus nurse, to schedule an appointment for your free TB skin test. You need to plan on two visits to Health Services: the first to receive the TB skin test and the second to check the test. Plan to have both visits completed two weeks BEFORE you turn in your co-teaching paperwork. If you prefer, you can obtain your TB skin test through your own health care provider.
When will I be informed about my placement?
All Avila students receive notice at the same time. Fall semester teacher candidates are notified the first week of May. Spring semester teacher candidates are notified the first week of December.
How long is my Final Clinical Experience?
All teacher candidates final clinical experience will be 12 weeks in order to fulfill program requirements. Candidates in Special Education may have additional student teaching weeks to ensure exposure to all pertinent grade levels.
What are the EXACT dates for my final clinical?
An email will be sent to your Avila email address from the Placement Coordinator for Clinical and Field-Based Experiences. This information will contain the name and contact information for your cooperating teacher at your assigned school, as well as the dates in which you must report at the school and the end time.
Why are my reporting and ending dates for my placement more than what is required?
We receive the district calendars from each district in which we have co- teachers placed. We eliminate from that time period any early release days or days in which the school is closed for various holidays or in-service. Certification requires that you are in the classroom and teaching for 12 FULL weeks. Teacher candidates with two placements, additional time will be required. We will deduct those days out of the calendar that are less than the full teaching day. Your reporting dates should be the ones you should abide by. IF you miss a day due to illness or weather, you will need to add the days absence to the end of your reporting time. This will be discussed more in seminar class.
What is seminar and when is it scheduled?
Seminar is scheduled on Thursday evenings, 4:45-6:15 throughout your Final Clinical Experience/Internship semester. Though seminar does not meet EVERY Thursday, you will receive the specific schedule at your Avila email address in May for the Fall Semester & in December for the Spring Semester. Attendance is MANDATORY at seminar due to the support role it plays in assisting you through Final Clinical Experience/Internship and preparation for the profession.
Can undergraduate teacher candidates do an internship?
Undergraduates are not allowed to complete and internship in place of Final Clinical Experience. Only Graduate Certification students may complete an internship.
How will I know if my references have come in or not?
The Teacher Placement Candidate Office will contact you if your references have not been received within a reasonable time.
If I want to intern and do not have a job yet, when is the last day to notify the Director of Clinical and Field-Based Experiences?
We do not accept applications for internship unless the applicant is already employed.
What if I change my mind about my internship AFTER I submit my application?
PLEASE contact the Placement Coordinator for Clinical and Field-Based Experiencesand notify your Avila advisor immediately.
