Campus Ministry is helping to raise money to support the Foundation to find a cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease. PKD is a disease that effects so many people in the world especially children. Jason Baldwin is directly effected because his beautiful daughter Sage has PKD. In fact, the Foundation recently shot a video about their story.
Please take time to view this video which can be found at http://www.pkdcure.org/ . You’ll see a picture of Jason’s family. Click on the Go button. It really tells the story.
If you would like to give to the cause simply e-mail me and I will send a student to pick up a check (made out to Avila) or cash. Or just drop the cash by the Campus Ministry Office or give it to a member of the Campus Ministry Team. If we raise $1000.00 we will celebrate by shaving the head of Jason Baldwin. You may have noticed he’s looking pretty shaggy lately.
Be part of the solution!

With winter approaching, the flu season is upon us. Avila hosted a flu shot clinic in early November and flu shots are still available at other community sites. However, Avila students, faculty and staff could still be at risk.
ÒStaying home when you are ill is the best thing to do,Ó said Carol Frevert, R.N. and director of Avila health services. ÒWhen you have a fever and are coughing, you need to isolate yourself to reduce the spread of the flu to others. Prevention is key to reducing the spread of the flu and covering coughs or sneezes and washing your hands regularly is essential.Ó
Influenza (commonly called the flu) usually starts suddenly and can include high fever, headache, extreme tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny nose and body aches. Diarrhea or vomiting can also occur but it is more common in children. However, having these symptoms does not always mean that you have the flu.
Note that healthy adults may be able to infect others one day before getting symptoms and up to five days after getting sick. Therefore, it is possible to give someone the flu before you know you are sick and after you think you are healthy again.
If you think you have the flu, the Center for Disease Control suggests staying home, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of liquids, and avoiding using alcohol and tobacco. For more information about the flu and prevention, log onto www.cdc.gov/flu.
Another infection that is prevalent this time of year is MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a potentially dangerous type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics and may cause skin and other infections. MRSA skin infections can occur anywhere and anyone can get it, however two of the most common locations for MRSA outbreaks are schools and dormitories.
ÒMRSA is a skin infection that looks like pimples or boils when it first begins and often is mistaken for a spider bite,Ó Frevert said.
Signs of MRSA include a bump or infected area of skin that is red, swollen, painful, warm to the touch, or full of drainage, and is accompanied by a fever. If you have a skin infection, it is recommended that you be referred to a licensed health care provider for diagnosis and treatment. To protect yourself, practice good hygiene, cover cuts or abrasions, avoid sharing personal items and maintain a clean environment.
For more information about MRSA and prevention, log onto www.cdc/gov/mrsa.
With bad weather around the corner, don’t wait to see if school has been cancelled – have a text message sent right to your phone. Avila University has created a text message alert service to contact members of the Avila community of events such as school cancellations. To sign up, click on the link found on the homepage or go to www.avila.edu/safe/ . Log in using you Avila ID and password, and complete the registration form.

We are the Walk Across America Group. We plan to walk across America without leaving campus. This is done by taking out steps we walk each week, calculating them into miles, then tracking our destinations. We hold a group walk session on Wednesdays from 12pm to 12:30pm and 12:30pm-1:00pm. If people can't make those sessions they can still track their steps/miles and give them to me. (Jenn Murphy), by emailing them to my avila account. The other contacts are Ann Grubbs, Maria Hunt and Teresa Loch.
