Dr. Shanda Curiel joined the Avila Psychology Department as the Director of Clinical Education and Training and Assistant Professor of Psychology in August of 2013. She is a native of the Kansas City area. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2002 and subsequently worked as a social worker for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Upon graduating with a Master of Arts and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute in 2006 and 2007, respectively, Dr. Curiel completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Goodman Psychological Services Center of Carlos Albizu University in Miami, Fl. and her post-doctoral residency at the Center for Psychological Health and Well-being in Aurora, Mo.
After returning to Kansas City, she worked as a clinical psychologist for Truman Medical Center’s acute psychiatric inpatient units, as well as a behavioral health consultant in the medical hospital’s Sleep Clinic. Currently, Dr. Curiel maintains a private practice specializing in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. Within her role at Avila, she oversees the clinical education and training of counseling psychology graduate students and teaches courses such as, Counseling Practicum, Internship, and Advanced Abnormal Psychology. Her areas of interest include evidence-based treatments for psychiatric disorders, namely cognitive-behavioral therapies for anxiety disorders, and supervision and training.
